By doing that, that's just going out and practicing, executing plays and showing him that you know what you're doing, you know your assignment every play, I think that's the best advice I can give a young guy that's coming in." Your coach has got to build trust in you. "That’s not really what gets you on the field. "Come in and learn, just sit back and learn and try to learn as much as you can because at this level it’s not always about talent and what you can do," Davis said. So what will it take for either or both to actually force their way into playing time this fall? With solid height and good athleticism, Burke has been able to go up against just about any defensive back and make some tough snags in traffic.Īsked to describe his first impressions of the freshman wideout, senior running back Malik Davis is short and to the point. "And he's tall and long, he's fast, he's athletic."īurke has made similar favorable impressions in camp, though he's a very different player. In fact, in speaking to reporters about Elksnis earlier in fall camp, Gamble had a tough time keeping it together. "You got to be physical, he’s a big body," Johnson said. He's not Pitts-level-athletic, but he's also much stronger as a true freshman than Pitts was, creating different challenges. But he’s coming to work every day."Įlksnis, like Pitts early in his career, is a tough cover because of how athletic he is for his size. "A lot of our young guys, they’ve got a lot of leadership and you got Gamble and Zipp, he’s got a lot of guys to look up to, so he’s improved. "Nick, he works hard and comes to work every day," said nickelback Tre'Vez Johnson, who has been tasked with covering Elksnis at times during fall camp.
The Gators are hoping to avoid a big drop-off at the position this fall, and while they're counting on veterans Kemore Gamble and Keon Zipperer to replace the bulk of production, it might just be Elksnis who helps replace the star power.
